Bacchus Bistro and Bar, New Farm

Tried to pop down to the New Farm Bistro on Easter Saturday for some brekky, only to find that they are under new ownership, a new name, and are in fact an entirely new business called Bacchus Bistro and Bar.

Right.

We decided to try their breakfasts anyway, in the hope that they would be of the same calibre as those of their predecessor. With a large table over which we spread the papers, we ordered the full breakfast (toast, baby sausages, bacon, fried eggs and tomato) and some fresh corn cakes with bacon and roast tomato, plus coffees. The verdict on the full breakfast was...pretty good. Bacon was definitely not crispy: in fact quite flaccid and limp. Lovely visual image there. Eggs were JUST set, sunny-side up. I could have handled them quite nicely but Mr Bacon-Lover prefers his eggs easy-over and with the yolks set firm. Not Bacchus' problem, though. Everything else was...pretty good. Not awesome, but good.

The corn cakes were fresh and tasty, with a good ratio of herb-to-cake. The bit of bacon on top had the same problem: serious lack of crispiosity. The roast roma tomatoes were very nice, but overall the dish was quite dry. Maybe an extra tomato would have juicied things up somewhat.

Coffees excellent and on the strong side.

Lovely and attentive wait staff. I was told that the new owner is interested in developing relationships with regular customers, seeing as it's not in a location where they're going to get a lot of passing foot traffic. This seems like a smart move, and I hope we can go back soon to try their dinner offerings (which do look really good).

Wait and see, Bacchus!
