The Little Larder, New Farm

A Sunday morning breakfast opportunity saw us determined to try this spot, whch has been very well-spoken of. In Moray St, off the main road: we thought it would be sparsely occupied at 8.30am How wrong we were!

The place was PACKED. And considering they only have a handful of tables... this meant there were quite a few of us groups standing uselessly around, perched on the chairs they have thoughtully provided for such instances, and looking hopeful each time a server passed by... just like at The Gun Shop Cafe.

Luckily though, the wait was quite pleasant. It was a beautifully sunny New Farm morning: small children crawled and frolicked around the tables, there was plenty of reading material and newspapers provided, and the passing array of tasty dishes helped our tastebuds decide what to order later.

Eventually we were offered a spot on a long table, squished in with another group, which we declined. We weren't THAT desperate... and then a table was available for us. Fantastic!

(I noticed a 'reserved' sign on one of the tables, so next time it will probably pay to book ahead).

What we ordered: a skinny flat white (good but not that hot) for me, and a hot mocha (had to be sent back as it was barely lukewarm) for him. The replacement mocha was excellent, and the staff were very understanding. That was the only sub-standard breakfast moment.

My eggs Benedict (MUST stop ordering poached eggs!) were excellent, a 9 out of 10. Possibly too big, with too much toast, not that that's really a complaint. It had a slice of multigrain underthe egg, and some sourdough perched on the side.... there was also a roast tomato and some baby spinach leaves under the ham. Yum.

The full fry-up was delicious, according to him. I tasted a slice of sausage, and it was firm and lamb-y, with hardly any greasiness, and lots of flavour. Hash browns, mushrooms, bacon, scrambled egg, roast tomato, sausage and toast. Any boy's heaven.
As we were leaving, a group arrived: four adults on bikes wearing sports gear, and each with an occupied child seat mounted on the back. They settled in for the long wait...
We'll definitely try The Little Larder again. It's got loads of character, good prices, and the food is great.
