ANZAC Day afternoon tea

We enjoyed a really nice afternoon tea on ANZAC Day. I felt a bit like some Enid Blyton character, sitting down to buns and lemonade at the top of The Faraway Tree with Moonface.

There were:

  • Plain scones with cream, blackberry jam or chestnut puree

  • Warm cinnamon buns

  • Homemade ANZAC biscuits

  • Custard tarts

  • Water crackers with "gentlemen's relish"

The buns were my attempt at the cinnamon buns on the front on one of the old Donna Hays from a few years ago. The problem was that the stupid yeast dough didn't rise enough, so the buns had to be re-thought. Also, I didn't have the special paper cases to bake them in. They ended up being flatter scroll-type buns. Still tasty though. Next time I will be sure to add a little more brown sugar, as I thought they weren't quite sweet enough on their own.

See the custard tarts here. Mum's gentlemen's relish is a yummy savoury paste made from pounded anchovies, lemon juice, butter, and probably some herbs or something as well. It is delicious spread thinly on a water cracker.
