Necklace display hanger

Made this in one afternoon after a trip to Bunnings.

The reasons were many:

  1. I have a lot of necklaces

  2. I don't like seeing them tangled in a drawer or in a box

  3. Some of them risk getting chipped, if they are constantly being ratted through (by me)

  4. I want to display them where I can see them

  5. They look good

  6. Makes getting ready each morning much easier

So I built this quick little display hanger. I deliberately made it plain, and almost the same colour as the wall, so that the necklaces would stand out and be the focus. You could definitely paint the hanger, though. That would be sweet.

1 plank of strong balsa wood

calico

hanging wire and wall hook

sewing pins

big piece of batting or padding

staple gun

nails and hammer

Wrap the batting around the plank and staple gun it together at the back. Fold all the edges in nicely. Then do exactly the same with the calico: fold it so that there are no raw edges or threads hanging out and you have a nice smooth fat plank. Staple gun it at the back.

Hammer two nails ALMOST all the way into the plank, on the top edge, about 10cm in from each end. Measure where the hook will go and how much wire you will need, then tie or wrap each end of the wire very securely around a nail. Once this is done you can hammer the nails in all the way. Check that it is hanging correctly, then poke some sewing pins into the wood at an angle, to hold all your treasures.

Note: it has to be balsa wood, because once the jewelry is on there it is going to be incredibly heavy, and also, balsa wood lets you easily move the pins as much as you like. The padding provides a cushion for your necklaces, and also stops any rattling or knocking.
