Cantina at West End

So we met up with a group of friends for an 8am Sunday morning breakfast at Cantina, the top end of Hardgrave Rd in West End. It's the classy end of Mexican-themed Brisbane dining, about as far from Pepe's and Montezuma's as you can get.
Had wanted to try Cantina for quite a while, and as it was I was quite taken with their collection of Mexican bullfight film posters (Seda, Sangre y Sol: Silk, Blood and Sand! Starring Pepe Ortiz!) and their simple and laid-back homey decor. It's a noisy place: polished concrete floor and lots of hard surfaces everywhere, but definitely a nice place for breakfast. The Mexican theme continues with the menu, where huevos rancheros is right at the top of the list. I should have tried it, but couldn't face that much flour tortilla and protein so early. Next time.
Our group of nine mostly tucked into hot breakfasts, except for one dear soul who chose the fruit toast with honey ricotta (it was delicious: $4). Verdicts all around were mostly good: the bacon was crispy, toasts were either cheese bread or corn bread, refried beans were tasty. (Should mention too that Cantina is a relatively cheap breakfast- the hot breakfasts were all between $8 and $15). My breakfast? Well, I had the Yucatan omelette: eggs with chili, potato and onion. It was pretty bland. Chili was so mild, you could had fed it to a baby. A sensitive, fragile baby, not one of those robust and indestructible ones that climb up cupboards and swing off chairs and fall eight feet to the tiles and then run off laughing like nothing has happened.
To be truly Mexican, the chili needed to be able to raise the dead. Or at least, to raise me out of my early-morning brain-fog.
Eggs seemed unseasoned to me. Corn bread was very soft and pale, hardly toasted at all. All in all I'd give my breakfast a 5 out of 10. Also, my coffee was barely warm. Opinions were backed up by Senor Porco, whose scrambled eggs with bacon got the "it's okaaay" remark. His mocha was warm too. However, we decided to give them the benefit of the doubt.
So, we'll probably go back, maybe for the interesting-looking tapas menu, or for the ranch eggs. It was a good, original and different breakfast, good enough to warrant a second visit.
