Refugee Festival

Last Sunday, popped over to the Annerley Sports Field to check out the Refugee Festival, celebrating World Refugee Day. Lots of dance and sporting activities going on, jumping castles, face painting and big slides for the kiddies, brightly-coloured turbans and robes as far as the eye could see, arts and crafts stalls and quite a few food stalls, set up by country and the cultural group that organised each one.
There was interesting-looking food from many African countries like Sierra Leone and Gabon, and lots of others that have escaped my memory. Didn't get round to sampling any, as it was mid-morning and I was still full of a late breakfast. A big presence from Fair Trade, freedom and human rights groups, people handing out flyers, footy players wandering around signing autographs and so on. It was a really lovely event and the atmosphere was welcoming and happy. Seemed like everyone was having a great time. I picked up some hand-woven bracelets, two packs of Fair Trade African coffee, and two beautiful big hand-carved wooden vases for... wait for it... five bucks each. Marked down from 10. Incredible!
Story here.
